Memorial Day began as the response to the civil war in which almost 620,000 soldiers died between both sides. The loss of thousands of life affected the whole country and led to several spontaneous memorials of the dead. In April 1866 Civil War veterans marched through town in memory of the soldiers who sacrificed their lives to Woodlawn Cemetery, where Union hero Maj. Gen. John A. Logan delivered the principal address. This ceremony was the first properly arranged community-wide Memorial Day observance.
The holiday was long known as Decoration Day because soldiers used to decorate the graves of the fallen with flowers, wreaths, and flags. The title Memorial Day became official in the 1880’s. The holiday legally became Memorial Day in 1967 after World War II. Federal law declared "Memorial Day". Due to the Uniform Monday Holiday Act which took place in 1971 Memorial Day was moved to the last Monday of May from its original day to make sure they have long weekends. Congress passed a law in December 2000 for Americans to stop all the work they are doing and pause at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day in order to remember and pay tribute to the fallen. But nobody remembers to practice this law as most people seem to be busy or doing important stuff by 3 p.m.
In 1988 over 2,500 motorcyclists rode into Washington, D.C., for the first Rolling Thunder rally to pay attention to Vietnam War soldiers still missing. But the number rises from 25,000 to 300,000 by 2002 mostly of them were veterans. By 2005 the numbers reached up to half-million participants in a parade.
In addition to the national holiday, nine southern states separated their days for honoring the Confederate dead, which is generally called Confederate Memorial Day namely: Alabama: fourth Monday in April; Georgia: April 26; Louisiana: June 3; Mississippi: last Monday in April; North Carolina: May 10; South Carolina: May 10; Tennessee (Confederate Decoration Day): June 3; Texas (Confederate Heroes Day): January 19; Virginia: last Monday in May.
